Travel envy (n): a feeling of grudging admiration and a desire to go places that others have been. | Travel envy levels may vary in intensity, like a tide ebbing and flowing inside you. Or like the force. Sometimes they're high - leaving you restless, and sometimes low - leaving you with whimsical thoughts. But it's always there in the background, like white noise. Or the force.

South Africa

Travel envy is what keeps you going after 4 flights with a 12-hour stopover in the world's worst airport. It’s what leads you to buy guidebooks to places you aren’t going (yet); and it’s what makes you hate your friends (just a little) when they talk about their travel plans. In extreme cases, you can even get travel envy simply from reminiscing about your own travels of old.

The World

In short, travel envy is a compelling need to explore. And while there's no fail-safe way to shut it out entirely (and why would you want to), you can take the edge off. So pour over stories of faraway places (here), search out hidden experiences in your own city, and when you can't stand it anymore: go out and see the world. Perhaps I'll see you along the way.

People go to the Himalayas for many reasons – to find spiritual clarity; to play strip poker with the Dalai Lama; to pit themselves against the forces of nature (who, let’s face it, would obviously prefer for you not to clamber all over Everest with gripons, messing up the pretty ice);

Come Fly With Me!

He’s saying something. I think. I can see his lips moving. He reaches out and puts his hand on my shoulder, nodding reassuringly. I focus on his hands, as he tightens my harness for the third time. He continues to speak. I think. I can’t hear what he says. He motions down the 45degree incline ...
